Firestopping
Commercial and Multifamily Firestopping
With every commercial or multifamily building project you undertake, your goal is to build a safe, long-standing structure that future owners, residents, and employees will use and enjoy for many years to come.
One of the most important pieces of guaranteeing the long-term safety of your building project is firestopping. Firestopping helps seal the gaps and openings in fire-rated walls, floors, and ceilings, preventing fire, smoke, and toxic gases from spreading through the building.

Code-Compliant Firestopping Solutions
Local building codes throughout the region require appropriate firestopping in newly constructed commercial and multifamily buildings.

Firestopping Methods
We use a variety of Metacaulk firestopping materials to protect your commercial or multifamily building from the spread of fire. Metacaulk products, manufactured by RectorSeal, are designed to comply with building codes and work to block flames, smoke, heat, and even water for up to four hours in fire-rated construction joints and through-penetrations.

Pipe Collars
- Used around combustible pipes that pass through fire-rated wall and floors.
- They expand when exposed to high heat and seal the opening to prevent fire and smoke from traveling through.
- Installed around the base of the pipe at floor or wall openings.
- Common in multifamily and commercial building where plumbing systems penetrate fire barriers.

Putty Pads
- Used for sealing electrical boxes, outlets, and other small penetrations in fire-rated walls.
- After application, the putty material remains soft and expands under heat to fill gaps and prevent fire spread.
- Applied directly to the back and sides of electrical boxes or other small openings.
- Common where fire-rated walls have multiple electrical and data box holes.

Fire Caulk
- Seals gaps around openings created by cables, conduits, pipes, and HVAC ductwork to keep fire-rated structures strong and effective.
- The caulk works by hardening into a fire-resistant barrier that expands when exposed to high heat.
- It’s applied with a caulk gun or trowel around small openings.
